Parc Torrent Maduixer

C Josep Garí, 7

This garden lies on hilly land with a 9 m gradient in the Sarrià - Sant Gervasi district, near Parc de Collserola.

This urban garden spanning 4,128.04 m² was designed for the roof of the new Torrent Maduixer municipal cleaning depot, an underground building that centralises the street-cleaning services of the Sant Gervasi – la Bonanova neighbourhood. The depot is unique for being an underground building, with a surface area of 2,406.56 m², and energy efficient, as it has a geothermal pump, a device that ensures high energy performance with low electricity consumption.

Biodiversity

The borders are lined by trees and shrubs, predominantly green, while the central area has flowering trees that prove highly attractive to butterflies and other insects. There are 79 trees from a variety of species: 13 tipu trees (Tipuana tipu), 2 foxglove trees (Paulownia tomentosa), 10 jacarandas (Jacaranda mimosifolia), 5 Indian bead trees (Melia azedarach), ash trees (Fraxinus ornus), 7 carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua), 5 holm oaks (Quercus ilex), 3 cork oaks (Quercus suber), Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) , 9 stone pines (Pinus pinea), 11 hackberry trees (Celtis australis) and 5 strawberry trees (Arbutus unedum).
Its lateral parterres contain shrubs such as pink agapanthus (Tulbaghia violacia), woolly Jerusalem sage (Phlomis lanata), violet-flower (Hebe sp ), “Sunset” rock rose (Cistus x pulverulentus), firecracker plant (Dicliptera suberecta), orange-flower daylilies (Hemerocallis), purpletop vervain (Verbena bonariensis), Chinese fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) and lion’s tail (Leonotis leonorus). Notable species in the central part include mastic trees (Pistacia lentiscus), violet summer lilacs (Buddleja davidii), Jerusalem thorns (Paliurus spina-christi), Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) and sweet bay (Laurus nobilis). There are also climbers and creepers such as Bengal clockvine (Thunbergia grandiflora), orange clockvine (Thunbergia gregorii) and Virginia creepers (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) as well as ivy (Hedera helix) on the sides.

Landscaping and Design

Landscaped slopes make up for the drops in level between the five terraces that form this urban garden,
and there is also a fast, lateral route, via stairs, that allows visitors to cross it from north to south. All the walls are held together with gabions and the paving is made from pre-cast concrete, gravel, red sand and pebbled concrete. The second terrace has six skylights that ensure natural light enters the interior of the underground cleaning depot.
