Summer operation by the City Police at the city’s beaches

The arrival of the good weather means the City Police has now activated its Beach Group, which started operating on 22 June and will continue its work until the end of September. Officers from the Beach Group will be patrolling the city’s ten beaches to help control capacity, ensure safety measures are in line with the current situation and respond to any other situations or problems arising along the coast.

City Police officers from the Beach Group will be patrolling on foot, on scooters, motor vehicles, bicycles and quads adapted to circulate on the sand. Their job is to check the volume of people on the beaches and restrict access completely or partially if that capacity is exceeded, guaranteeing physical distances between people. To improve surveillance and control tasks at the groynes, the police corps also has two semi-rigid boats, measuring 6.5 metres and 7.5 metres respectively.

How can I know how busy a Barcelona beach is?

Barcelona City Council has a specific website with information on the status of the ten beaches in the city, enabling people to check the occupancy level of each of them: http://barcelona.cat/platges.

Where should you go if you are the victim of pickpocketing or theft on a Barcelona beach?

If you are the victim of pickpocketing or theft you should go and report it at the joint police office (City Police and Mossos d’Esquadra corps) at the Barceloneta beach. From a module by the beach and another at the groyne on the Bogatell beach, municipal officers control and follow up on everything detected at the beaches, such as people swimming in dangerous areas, unlicensed vending and petty crime.

Balance for 2019

Last year saw the Beach Group report 18,719 cases of unlicensed vending of food and drink, with 172,471 unlicensed drinks confiscated. There were also denouncements for 144 cases of swimmers not respecting bathing indications, mainly for bathing at the groyne or in other areas where it is restricted or not permitted. The City Police also denounced 3,633 personal mobility vehicles.
