Work gets under way on the temporary Abaceria Central marketWork on the provisional Abaceria Central market started on Monday 15 January. Stallholders at the current market are expected to be able to move to the new infrastructure in Pg. Sant Joan four months from now, when construction work concludes.
The provisional market will open in the spring and have 43 food and drink stalls inside and 14 other stalls outside. It will also feature all services needed to ensure the market functions properly, such as refrigeration units, adapted services, waste treatment, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, lighting and electricity, a sewage system, store rooms and logistics. In all, the facility will have a surface area of 1,900 square metres and occupy the section between C/ Indústria and C/ Sant Antoni Maria Claret. There will be entrances at each end and another in the centre of the structure.
The provisional market, which has a budget of 3,242,233.10 euros, will not affect traffic circulation in Pg. Sant Joan, and the majority of trees in the avenue will remain in place. A 4.5 metre wide pedestrian zone will be kept clear, in parallel with the road in the downward direction.
Green light for the new Abaceria Central market
The proposal for the definitive market was approved by the majority of stallholders from the market at an assembly in July 2016 and entails a comprehensive overhaul of the building, with an approximate budget of 25 million euros. In 2018 the architectural project for the new market will be defined and work will begin. The market is expected to be ready in 24 to 30 months.
