The 39th edition of the La Mercè Fun Run commemorates the 25th anniversary of the 1992 BCN Olympic Games with 12,000 runners

Sunday, 17 September marks the celebrations of the 39th La Mercè Fun Run, Barcelona’s most popular fun run. Participants started arriving at 8 am at Av. Reina Maria Cristina, the fun run’s setting-off point. Participants gradually filled the area. After preliminary warm-ups, the 12,000 runners taking part in the event positioned themselves behind the setting-off line. The La Mercè Fun Run kicked off at 9 am. Three separate set-offs took place, five minutes apart, to avoid any over-crowding.

This year’s La Mercè Fun Run, set on working for social inclusion through sport, included several categories for people with functional diversity of various types.

The La Mercè Fun Run relives the 1992 Barcelona Olympic and Paralympic Games

The 39th edition of the Fun Run has a special side to it, as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Barcelona Games. So the opportunity was taken to use the run for paying homage to the 1992 sports event. That is why, the shirt chosen for runners this year was white, in memory of the volunteers for the 1992 Olympic Games. In addition, the shirt features motifs from the Games.

In addition, a special prize was also awarded to the first person born in 1992 to cross the finishing line: the athlete Albert Nogueras.

The winners set new records

Lidia Rodriguez in the women’s category and Mourad El Bannouri in the men’s won this year’s fun run. Both, what is more, succeeded in beating the record for both categories. El Bannouri finished in 29 minutes and 24 seconds. Lidia Rodriguez took 34 minutes and12 seconds to finish the race.
