The Olympic torch circulates in Barcelona again

Barcelona 1992. Various sports people, entities and representatives from the civil society will be carrying the Olympic torch from the Palauet Albéniz to Plaça Catalunya. ‘Epi’ will carry the torch on the final stretch.

Tuesday 25 July is a festive day, with touches of history and excitement in the city of Barcelona. Barcelona is preparing a public celebration to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona ‘92 Olympic Games. One of the acts which will conjure up some of the most memories of the original event is the route for the Olympic torch and flag, which aims to symbolise and recreate the route of the flame in 1992.

The torch sets off from the Palauet Albéniz at 8.30 pm and ends up in Plaça Catalunya, the epicentre for the celebrations, at 9.45 pm. In all, a 6.5 km route which takes in some of the city’s most iconic spots. As in 1992,the final stretch will be run by the well-known basketball player Juan Antonio San Epifanio, ‘Epi’. Antonio Rebollo, whose arrow lit the Olympic flame during the inauguration of the Games, will be waiting in Plaça Catalunya. He will receive the Olympic flame there and, in an act brimming with emotion and symbolism, will light the burner from the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.

The torch will be carried by sports people from the ‘92 Olympic Games and competitors from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as people from the civil society (cultural, political and social spheres, the media etc.). Each torch carrier will be accompanied by a representative from one of thirty varied entities from the city, chosen by districts.
