Barcelona, a meeting point for culture and education

09/05/2022 - 10:00 h

We are in the final stretch of the school year, so it is time to show what we have been working on during these months. In our city, more than 40 creators and a bunch of cultural spaces have taken part this year in different creative processes that bring together artists and the educational community. They have done so through the programmes EN RESiDÈNCiA, Tot Dansa, Escena Pilot and +Escena, promoted by the Barcelona City Council, the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona and other agents in the sector, all initiatives within the Cultural Rights Plan within the framework of the Culture and Education Measures. These programmes aim to establish long-term connections between the agents of contemporary creation and educational centres, also understood as spaces of creation, to link the educational community and the artistic field through experiences inside and outside the classroom. In the coming weeks, and until 3 July, these processes will be shown, in some cases in the educational centres, but in others in different cultural spaces in the city; in the latter case, attendance is open to everyone.

In its thirteenth edition, 450 pupils and 48 teachers from 26 different schools and 16 mediating teams took part in the EN RESiDÈNCiA programme. The programme proposes a shared working space for artists, students and teachers from the city’s public high schools. Throughout the school year, creators from different fields, such as visual arts, scenic creation, poetry or music, develop a process of artistic creation together with the students, the teaching staff and the mediating teams. Each of the 26 centres will make its own presentation, hosting cultural spaces and facilities such as the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Fundació Joan Miró, Hangar, El Born CCM, the Sala Beckett and La Central del Circ.

Tot Dansa promotes integration and teamwork through the language of movement and contemporary dance. 202 students and 23 teachers from 12 public secondary schools in Barcelona have taken part, and the final exhibition will take place on 11 and 17 May at the Mercat de les Flors. When it comes to Escena Pilot, its aim is to allow teenage students to live a collective creative theatre experience in a professional environment. It is promoted by the Institut Municipal d’Educació de Barcelona and the Teatre Lliure. This year, it has celebrated its third edition, with the participation of 5 public secondary schools in Barcelona, 104 students and 12 teachers. They will showcase the results of their creative process on 26 and 27 May at the Lliure.

As for +Escena, the programme promotes the arts and stage creation in the educational environment outside school hours, targeting extracurricular theatre groups in public secondary schools. It is designed for citizens to get to know young talents and incorporate them into their cultural fabric. You will have the opportunity to discover these new talents on 28 May at Fabra i Coats – Fàbrica de Creació.
