Emel Mathlouthi

Tunísia

Fusió / World Music / Folk

Known as “the voice of the Arab spring”, this Tunisian artist has never been afraid to break the rules or express herself clearly, bravely and proudly about social rights and dignity. Her song “Kelmti Horra” (“My Word is Free”) filled the streets of Tunisia and ended up becoming the anthem of a whole people. Influenced by various artists, from Joan Baez and Amalia Rodrigues to Elisa Serna and Sheikh Imam, Mathlouthi fuses rock and trip-hop with the natural music of her Maghreb and the Middle East, blending hypnotic sounds of ragga and Gnawa culture.
