Barcelona hosts the “Your Plate, Your Planet” conference: a global movement of cities committed to addressing the climate emergency

From 23 to 25 May, technical and political leaders from six cities around the world met in Barcelona to make progress in developing food policies for climate action.

The global agri-food system is responsible for between 21% and 37% of total net anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. To raise awareness of this reality, the “Your Plate, Your Planet” campaign explains how local food policies are essential in the face of the climate emergency and calls on municipalities around the world and their inhabitants to make commitments to promote food policies that ensure access to sufficient, agro-ecological, healthy and nutritious food for the entire population with the Barcelona Challenge for Good Food and Climate.

As part of the campaign, from 23 to 25 May, two international training meetings on food policies were held with representatives and agents of the cities committed to the challenge, namely: Belo Horizonte, Rosario, Ougadougou, Antananarivo, Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Kazan, Valencia, Barcelona, Granollers, Milà, Greater Lyon, Le Havre Seine Métropole, Quelimane, Indore, Mouans-*Sartoux, Jammu, Chandigarh, Sagar, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bogota and Marseille.

The initiative addresses the two key challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation to the resulting climate emergency, with a commitment to transforming local agri-food systems to ensure access to sufficient, sustainable, healthy and nutritious diets for all people, thereby preventing food vulnerability and enhancing food justice.

2030 Barcelona Sustainable Food Strategy

Barcelona City Council is working locally on these international challenges set forth in the Barcelona Challenge for Good Food and Climate with the Barcelona 2030 Sustainable Food Strategy (EASB2030). This document will be the roadmap to be followed in terms of food policies over the next eight years in order to make food something that will boost sustainable local economies, combat inequalities and improve our health and that of the planet, without compromising future generations.

A citizen participation process is currently being carried out to compare the findings of the city plenary meetings with those of the general public and to gather new contributions on how to promote sustainable food in the city over the coming years.
This citizen participation process is open to all citizens until 12 June and members of the public can participate in various ways: through the process survey on Decidim.barcelona, by contributing ideas to the existing debates around the 8 strategic objectives identified in the EAS2030 or by participating in one of the open sessions with organisations and citizens.
