Environment and sustainability. A total of 577,000 tonnes was collected last year, representing 39.4% of all waste generated, an increase of 1.1% compared to 2021.

Selective waste collection accounted for 39.4% of all waste generated last year, representing an increase of 1.1% compared to the previous year and a total of 577,000 tonnes. Work is in progress to reach 55% in 2025 and meet the obligatory target set by the European Union.

The collection of plastics and metal, which has increased the most, is up by 10.3% compared to 2021, thanks to the broader range of waste allowed in yellow containers in Barcelona. People can now dispose of plastic and metal in these containers, even if they are not packaging, for instance saucepans and cutlery etc.

Reusing or recycling waste reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which is why the different administrations have set goals for the coming years. The challenge is to reach 55% in 2025 and 65% in 2035.

Increasing and improving selective waste collection also means financial savings for families. Municipalities which separate waste well pay up to three times less, with the tax ranging from 50 to 107 euros per household per year.
