The festival, which celebrates its 30th anniversary, will design the show that closes the Festes de la Mercè in 2023.

The European festival pioneer in advanced music and innovation, Sónar, will experience a very special edition between 15 and 17 June: its 30th anniversary. But it is not only those days that Sónar’s mark will be present in the city: coinciding with the presentation of the festival’s line-up, the organisers have announced that Sónar is working on the design of this year’s La Mercè Pyromusical, the great fireworks and music show that, as is tradition, closes Barcelona’s Festa Major (Barcelona’s main festival).

This will be in September and, beyond the announcement, no further details have been given about what the Piromusical de la Mercè 2023 will be like. However, the main ingredients of the festival have already been revealed, an event that will have more than 250 proposals, including concerts, DJ sets, masterclasses, talks and discussion forums. The event aims to synthesise three decades of constant celebration and innovation, both in terms of content and formats.

Among the concerts, highlights include shows by Aphex Twin, BICEP live, Bad Gyal, Little Simz, Fever Ray, Oneohtrix Point Never, Max Cooper and Eric Prydz with his exclusive HOLO, the most powerful immersive audiovisual show of the moment. Also performing will be Samantha Hudson, La Zowi and the rappers Cakes Da Killa, making their debut in Spain, and Shygirl, for the first time at Sónar. The DJ sets will feature names such as Black Coffee, Amelie Lens, Peggy Gou, The Blessed Madonna, Solomun and Richie Hawtin, among many others.

Sónar by Day, at Fira Montjuïc, will renew its layout and improve its equipment and facilities to offer a new, more comfortable catering area and new dance areas for the public. There will be up to five music stages. Likewise, the art, science and digital culture event Sónar+D will be even more open to the public at Sónar by Day to present this year’s most participative programme in its history, with music stages located along the festival route and more than a hundred activities, including masterclasses, debate forums, talks and project exhibition areas. And Sónar by Night, at Fira Gran Via L’Hospitalet, will be where you can see performances such as Aphex Twin, who will return to the festival after 12 years, Bad Gyal, or the most important names on the world clubbing scene, for example the South Korean Peggy Gou and the American Honey Dijon.

As it has done every year since 1994, Sónar will transform Barcelona into the epicentre of avant-garde music and arts, bringing together audiences, artists and professionals from all over the world, attracted by innovation in content and formats to the multiple stages and venues of Fira Barcelona. A festival that in three decades has experienced more than a hundred editions all over the world – this year 2023 has also been held in Lisbon and Istanbul. Sónar Barcelona 2023 is an initiative of Advanced Music, with the collaboration of Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
