Tot Dansa launches a new edition under the artistic direction of Magí Serra and Joan Cot

17/10/2025 - 12:00 h

Six public secondary schools in Barcelona will take part in the project Escala 1:1000 during the 2025–2026 edition of the programme.

After a public call to select the choreographic direction for the 2025–2026 edition of Tot Dansa (pictured, a performance from a previous edition), the commission has chosen Magí Serra Forasté and Joan Cot Ros with their proposal Escala 1:1000.

The project is both pedagogical and artistic, focusing on movement and its relationship with sound and music—meeting, diverging, intertwining, ignoring each other, and playing with the different dynamics that arise between the two. The proposal invites students to understand the performing arts as a refuge, a space where time moves differently; a place for self-discovery and understanding; a good ground for exploring what is often underestimated.

The selection committee, made up of representatives from ICUB, Mercat de les Flors, and Institut del Teatre, praised the project for its poetic and interdisciplinary nature, its attention to detail, and its ability to encourage students to rediscover their own reality through body and sound.

The committee also highlighted the complementary nature of the artistic team, which combines expertise in movement with research in sound and technology. The proposed teacher training approach was especially valued, as it treats the process as a form of mediation—helping adapt the project to the specific contexts of each school while creating a safe space for collective learning.

Students from six public schools—Institut Barri Besòs, Institut Doctor Puigvert, Institut Escola Antaviana, Institut Joan Brossa, Institut Martí Pous, and Institut Pedralbes—will work alongside the artistic and teaching teams. Escala 1:1000 will encourage them to observe and document their immediate surroundings through audio, video, text, photography, or drawing. From this material, and with other creative tools, they will develop a collective performance that will be presented at Mercat de les Flors on May 6, 2026.

Tot Dansa: more than 10 years and 1,800 young participants

Since its launch in 2010–2011, the programme has brought together 46 public schools, 1,800 students, 163 teachers, and 15 choreographic directors, including Toni Mira, Inés Boza, and Sònia Gómez, among others.

As a collective artistic creation project aimed at students and teachers from Barcelona’s public secondary and high schools, Tot Dansa promotes cohesion, inclusion, and teamwork through the language of movement and contemporary dance.

The project is organised by Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB), Mercat de les Flors, and Institut del Teatre. The collaboration between these three institutions bridges the worlds of dance and education, fostering an invaluable exchange of experiences among young people.
