Barcelona celebrates World Theatre Day
Activities have been programmed for the 24th and 27th of March and free family theatre tickets will be available on the 22nd and 23rd
World Theatre Day is coming up on the 27th of March but in order to make the most of the fact that a lot of theatres close on Mondays, theatre staff and actors will kick off the celebrations by gathering in the Plaça Universitat on Monday the 24th at 6pm under the slogan “If people won’t go to the theatre, the theatre will go to the people”. The event will continue until 9pm and will include street theatre, makeup, children’s activities, theatre pieces currently showing in Barcelona, etc., as well as the reading of the 2014 World Theatre Day Messages. This year, Clara Segura will read the International Message written by South African Brett Bailey and Àngels Bassas will read the message written by the AADPC (Professional Actors and Directors Association of Catalonia). In addition, in the Teatre Romea at 8pm there will be a presentation entitled Una vida en el teatro (A life in the theatre) by actress Montserrat Carulla, who has announced her retirement from the stage at the end of this year. Prior reservation is required.
On World Theatre Day itself, Thursday the 27th of March, at 1pm, the Peña Carlos Lemos will inaugurate the Ronda de les Actrius in the Plaza Margarita Xirgu in which a series of 41 plaques with the names of the winners of the Margarita Xirgu Memorial Award will be planted among the park’s trees. During the course of the evening all theatres will include a reading of this year’s two messages as part of their normal function.
On another note, the children’s theatre initiative "Viu el Teatre” will celebrate World Day for Children and Young People, which took place on the 20th of March, and as part of the celebration Viu el Teatre will be giving away tickets for boys and girls who accompany an adult to see El Petit Elefant on the 22nd of March at 5.30pm in the CCCB, or Planeta Tumàcat on the 23rd at 12.30 (midday) in the Poliorama.
