The Barcelona Festival of Science, Technology, and Innovation opens with a Conference on Research and Enterprise

The Disseny Hub Barcelona will host a conference designed to bring together the impressions, views, and experiences of those involved in research and innovation in Catalonia

The ‘Conference on Research and Enterprise­­­: Collaborating to compete better’ will be held this Thursday, June 5th as a practical meeting point where all those with an interest in research and innovation can analyse the factors that bring them together and those that separate them, examine the way in which they perceive their environment and discover the challenges facing them today and how to overcome them.

The conference will present a number of success cases with a view to finding which key solutions are suitable for implementation in business management. There will also be an opportunity to learn how small, medium-sized and large companies have all turned to collaboration as a key factor in development, competitiveness, and success. One of the goals of the meeting is to discover the extent of the business opportunities offered by state-of-the-art technologies with a view to identifying those aspects that are suitable for application to new business initiatives.

The conference will begin at 9 pm with an overall assessment of Catalonia’s current situation within the knowledge-based economy entitled ‘What are the current challenges facing this alliance?’ The session will be chaired by Mr Josep M. Piqué, CEO Office Of Economic Growth - EEIO -Barcelona City Council and European Division President of the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP), as well as Joan Bellavista, Manager of the Catalan Network of Science and Technology Parks (XPCAT) and former IASP President. The Conference will end at 5.30 pm following a series of debates and presentations conducted by Mr Tomàs Molina, head of meteorology and director of the Espai terra programme of the Catalan public TV channel, TV3, and member of the Parliamentary Advisory Board on Science and Technology, and Albert Closas, economist and director of the TV3 programme, Valor afegit.

The conference is part of the Barcelona Festival of Science, Technology, and Innovation , the 2014 edition of which begins next Wednesday, June 4th at 6 pm in the ‘Saló de Cent’ Room of the Barcelona City Council. The opening address, entitled ‘Graphene, research and enterprise. An exceptional commitment to innovation and competitiveness in Europe,’ will be given by Prof Andrea Ferrari, Chairman of the Executive Board of Graphene Flagship and founder and director of the Cambridge Graphene Centre. The address will present Graphene Flagship as a significant research initiative that seeks to further mutual understanding between research and enterprise in order to permeate European society within a ten-year period and create economic growth, employment, and new opportunities for Europe.
