The inside of the Model prison

Barcelona’s Model prison is open to visitors until the end of November

The registration period for visiting the prison has now begun, offering the last chance to see it before its official closure

Until now the only way of visiting Barcelona’s Model prison was as a guard, a lawyer or a prisoner. But the prison, which is infamous for housing both notorious thieves like El Vaquilla and political prisoners like the ill-fated Salvador Puig Antich is set to close down for good and can be visited before that happens on 26 November.

Registration is now open and visits will begin on 3 July. The tour takes in all of the prison’s modules and is structured around the stories of 13 illustrious prisoners, including Lluís Companys and Ferrer i Guàrdia.

Tour groups, which depart every 15 minutes, are limited to 15 people and those interested must reserve a specific day and time.
