Bernardo Bertolucci returns with “Me and You”

The latest film by the veteran Italian film maker, which sees its national release on the 26th of July, is an intimist drama about the insecurities of youth

Me and You, by Bernardo Bertolucci (Last Tango in Paris, 1900, The Last Emperor), tells the story of a fourteen year old boy who, deceiving his mother on the pretence that he is on a school ski trip, decides to hide out in the basement of a house to spend a week away from everything.

During this brief period he attempts to isolate himself momentarily from a society that in no way convinces him. All goes well, however, until one day his stepsister, nine years older than him, arrives at the basement with the idea of staying a few days to try and come to terms with her addiction to heroin.

Following some of the lines already explored by the director in his previous film, The Dreamers (youth, idealism, insecurity and carnal desires within a context of social change), Me and You is, in general terms, a sensitive and vitalist film about inexperience and the process of maturing in young people.

The film, presented in the Cannes International Film Festival and the last edition of the festival in San Sabastian, is based on the homonymous novel by Niccolò Ammaniti and stars, almost exclusively, two young debutants, Jacopo Olmo Antinori and Tea Falco. The film can be seen in our cinemas from the 26th of July.
