Biel Ballester Trio, on the 17th of September

A top-notch proposal gypsy jazz proposal in the Milano

Biel Ballester on lead guitar, Leo Hipahucha on double bass and Graci Pedro on rhythm guitar make up the Biel Ballester Trio, a top-notch gypsy jazz, or manouche band.

Jazz manouche, or gypsy swing is a musical style that originated in Europe between the World Wars at the hands of musicians such as guitarist Django Reinhardt or the Ferret brothers. Gypsy jazz owes its origins to North American swing, but is filtered through European music of the time and places specific emphasis on styles such as the waltz. With the Biel Ballester Trio, however, one may also hear elements of traditional Mediterranean music and contemporary American jazz.

The trio was founded in Barcelona but has played to audiences in a number of countries. The renowned film maker, Woody Allen, selected them as part of the soundtrack for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The director, an amateur clarinetist, played with the trio and was captivated by their proposal, even going as far as to say, “It’s the closest I’ve come to playing with Django Reinhardt”.

For the moment, the latest recording by the trio is titled Avanti! and was released in 2012. Next Tuesday the 17th, in the Milano, will be a perfect opportunity to hear them live.
