Sweet Marta & The Blues Shakers will be playing at Poble Espanyol on 16 August

Non-stop blues up on Montjuïc

Chino & the Big Bet, Wax & Boogie and Big Dani Pérez & the Marc Ferrer Trio are among the performances coming up in the next few weeks at Poble Espanyol.

For the fifth consecutive summer, Poble Espanyol is hosting the Blues Nights cycle of concerts featuring top level artists selected by the Capibola Blues school and the Barcelona Blues Festival. Since 21 June the cycle has seen performances by artists such as The Flat Pack, Red Rombo, Big Mama Montse and A Contra Blues. But there’s still a lot of music in store before the cycle draws to an end on 27 September.

The concerts in the cycle are always on Thursdays from 9pm and 16 August sees a performance by Sweet Marta & The Blues Shakers, a formation with a couple of discs on the market who combine their own compositions with covers of songs by figures like Koko Taylor and Junior Wells. A week later it’ll be time for Chino & the Big Bet, a group that also includes swing songs in its repertoire. The concerts in August will end with a high-energy set of songs that reach out towards rock, soul and funk by the Tòfol Martínez Blues Band.

September will kick off with Wax & Boogie, who are specialized in 1930s boogie-woogie, 1940s swing and 1950s style rhythm and blues. The Ramblers, on 13 September, Big Dani Perez & the Marc Ferrer Trio on 20 September and The Suitcase Brothers on 27 September will star in the last three concerts of the season.
