The Born CC hosts a conference with Ismail Saregeldin, director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

On the 3rd of July in the Born Centre Cultural, Ismail Serageldin, the Egyptian-born founder and director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, will offer a presentation on the current social and scientific challenges facing cultural heritage organisations and the role these will play in future social and cultural developments.

The event, entitled Coneix el món, coneix-te a tu mateix (Know the world, know yourself), will take the form of a master-class-style conference and will apply the finishing touches to the series of presentations entitled La Ciutadella, el primer parc científic de Barcelona (La Ciutadella, Barcelona’s first science park), which has been running throughout most of the month of June with the collaboration of the Natural Science Museum and Barcelona Zoo.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina opened in 2002 with the aim of recapturing the spirit of knowledge and wisdom that was a characteristic of the former building, destroyed in the 4th century A.D. The worldwide macro-project headed by UNESCO in collaboration with the Egyptian government includes four museums, millions of books, a planetarium, a children’s science exploratorium, a ‘culturama’ – an interactive cultural perspective on more than 5000 years of cultural heritage – ten academic research centres, fifteen permanent exhibitions, four art galleries and a conference centre.

Following the talk, the rector of Pompeu Fabra University, Jaume Casals, will present a synthesis of the conclusions reached during the course of the series in an effort to establish a debate concerning the scientific tradition of the Ciutadella park and its future as a scientific point of reference in the city.

The conference will take place in the Born Centre Cultural on the 3rd of July beginning at 7 pm. Entry is free though seating is limited.
