A busy night for museums

The event will feature 74 cultural spaces in Barcelona, including its metropolitan area, aside from the regular expositions, for visitors to enjoy several activities.

On Sunday, May 15th, Barcelona's classical spring event "Nit dels Museus" will be back once again: temporary and permanent exhibitions at local museums, activities from guided tours to workshops, contests, games, concerts, and more, with something for all age groups.

This year's edition, starting on the afternoon of the 15th, will feature 74 cultural spaces within Barcelona and its neighboring towns. Can Fontanet, the Interpretation Centre of Tres Tombs de Sant Andreu de Palomar, will be joining the event in Barcelona for the first time this year.

"Nit dels Museus" is a special occasion to enjoy the great variety of cultural spaces Barcelona has to offer. Some thoughtful exhibitions worth highlighting are Felix Gonzalez-Torres's deep retrospections in "Politica de relació," hosted at MACBA; Nanni Balestrini's "La violència il·lustrada," showing at La Virreina, and the sample "Per una educació en llibertat," presented at El Born CCM. If you like history, at Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, you'll find "La guerra infinita," and at the Museu Maritim, "Imatges trobades. La Barcelona marítima de la postguerra." A much more colorful perspective of history is the exhibition "El somni americà. Del pop a l'actualitat" at CaixaForum, and for those longing for far travels, "Mart. El mirall vermell" at CCCB will take you to another planet. There will also be some more immersive experiences such as "Symphony" at CaixaForum.

This years' program is offering an impressive number of guided tours, such as one through the old aqueduct, the Roman wall and the Sant Antoni Market, the Born CCB, the Montjuïc Castle, the different MUHBA equipment, the Brossa Foundation, and so on – arranged and guided by the Archeology Service. In addition to tours, there will also be concerts — at Museu de la Música, Born, CaixaForum, etc. —, dance at the Montjuïc Castle, poetry at La the Virreina Palace, workshops — at the Museu de l'Institut del Teatre, the Archeology Museu, Catalonia's History Museum, Cosmo Caixa, etc. — and interactive activities.

Susana Blasco, winner of the award Gràfica thanks to her contribution to the collage technique, has designed this years' "Nit dels Museus" visual identity. It's made out of distinct circles filled with lights, stars and textures that might represent day and night, the moon cycle, eclipses, etc. It could also symbolize people walking attracted by the museums. Or we could even imagine small capsules filled with culture, emotions and discoveries because everything is possible at the "Nit dels Museus."

This year, following the current sanitary recommendations, the night will be celebrated under special conditions to ensure people's safety when visiting museums and taking part in the program’s activities. Moreover, visitors need to be aware of what places, including museums and activities, require booking tickets to control their capacity.

Nit dels Museus will mark the beginning of some intense workdays for these museums, as it will be the start of International Museum Day, an event for which many museums are opening their doors to the public and organizing a range of activities from May 16th to 18th. More information can be found on each of the museums' websites.
