The CaixaForum explores “Cyber-affection in film”

The relationship between humans and robots, or artificial intelligences, has been explored in depth in the world of film from various points of view and in various genres. With this as the central theme, from the 6th to the 24th of May the CaixaForum presents a series entitled Els ciberafectes en el cinema (Cyber-affection in film), coordinated by film critic Jordi Costa.

The series consists of a conference and five films and begins on the 6th of May at 7 pm with a chat entitled Amar en tiempos disueltos given by Costa himself. On the 10th and 13th, respectively, spectators will be treated to two key titles in Japanese animated film: Metropolis and Ghost in the Shell, the first being an adaptation of the Manga titled created by Osamu Tezuka and inspired by the classic Fritz Lang film. The second fuses reflection with mysticism in order to expound on new moral dilemmas posed by the interaction between humanity and artificiality.

The 17th will see the turn of the film that Steven Spielberg inherited from Stanley Kubrick, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, an adaptation of a story by Brian Aldiss which, in turn, is a recreation of the Pinocchio myth in a future in which humanity feels the need to manufacture its own affectionate prostheses. The 20th will feature Moon, the winning film in the 2009 Sitges Film Festival in which an astronaut isolated on a lunar base ends up discovering a terrifying secret about his own identity.

The final film in the series, on the 24th of May, will be the recent Spike Jonze film Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay the film deals with a time when the battle against loneliness leads to humanity’s total dependency on machines. All films will begin at 7 pm.
