Montjuïc shantytown

The exhibition ‘LIVING ON MONTJUÏC. Memories of a Forgotten Shantytown’ opens its doors in Montjuïc Castle.

On Thursday 30 January, Montjuïc Castle opens its doors to an exhibition that shows the lifestyle of two generations in Montjuïc shantytown, which was part of the district for many years. To prevent this period of the city’s history from falling into oblivion, the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona has organised this exhibition, produced by Advanced Leisure Services and the Eurecat technological centre, with the aim of remembering a period that is now only in the minds of those who formed part of it. The exhibition is divided into two rooms of the centre, where the two generations recount their stories: the people who came to the city and settled in the shanties in order to survive, and those who explain what their childhood was like in that district which, at the beginning, had none of the basic services that are needed by all citizens.

You can visit ‘LIVING ON MONTJUÏC. Memories of a Forgotten Shantytown’ in Montjuïc Castle, from 30 January to 2 August 2020. You will find it in Rooms 18 and 19 of the museum, and you’ll be able to see audio-visual and photographic material of people’s experiences during that period.

Tickets to enter the venue cost €5.00, although admission is free every Sunday after 3.00 pm and you can enter free of charge all day on the first Sunday of the month. Check out the museum opening times here.
