A Century of Catalan Sculpture, in the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern

A Century of Catalan Sculpture is an exhibition of unprecedented historical scope, and occupies the entire interior of the MEAM, beginning in the patio, which harbours works that are simply too heavy to be displayed in the interior, such as La Puixança, by Josep Clarà, or Homage to Newton, by Salvador Dalí, among others, and extended throughout the three floors of the museum.
 

The first floor hosts a representative selection of the more archetypical creators of 19th century Catalan modernism and other turn-of-the-century authors including sculptures by Rossend Nobas, Josep Llimona and Miquel Blay.
 

The second floor plays host to the realism of Julio Antonio as well as sculptors linked to the idealist noucentisme movement, such as Manolo Hugué and Frederic Marès, and great expressionist sculptors, like Pau Gargallo and Apel·les Fenosa and others, who developed their art from the first decades of the century until well into the Spanish civil war. Without a doubt, one of the most prolific periods in 20th century Catalan sculpture.
 

Finally, on the third floor, there is a selection of contemporary artists who continue to create, such as Patricia Riveras, Adrià Arnau or Jorge Egea, among others.
 

Organised by José Manuel Infiesta in collaboration with Àgueda Romanyà, the exhibition hosts a selection of more than 80 sculptors and 300 pieces. An affordable catalogue is available (9€) containing reproductions of all the pieces on display.
