Classical music in Nou Barris

The music in the Mercè Festival spreads to the Nou Barris neighbourhood

For four days, the neighbourhood’s Plaça Major will host classical music concerts by OBC, Orquestra del Liceu and the Barcelona Municipal Band.

Although the activities associated with the Mercè Festival take place in and around Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella and port areas, during the four days of official festivities, from 22 to 25 September, the Plaça Major in Nou Barris: will be hosting a daily programme of classical music played by some of the city’s iconic musical institutions: the Barcelona Municipal Band, the OBC and the orchestra and choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The end of the festival, on Monday 25 September, will be marked by Vozes, a social integration project that works with boy and girls from disadvantages neighbourhoods by integrating them in choral music programmes.

The concerts scheduled for Nou Barris from 22 to 24 September are the following : for Friday, the Barcelona Municipal Band has prepared a programme of 19th century Catalan music, including old sardanas and popular compositions. Saturday will see a concert by the OBC, conducted by Kazushi Ono, featuring a repertoire of Romantic pieces by Rossini, Grieg and Berlioz, with an appearance by Icelandic mezzo-soprano Gudrún Ólafsdóttir. On Sunday, it’s the turn of the Orchestra of the Liceu, conducted by Josep Pons, with a programme of the greatest moments in opera for orchestra and choir.
