‘Compra’m’, a multidisciplinary show which combines art and technology
This creation by Insectotròpics, which was awarded at Future Internet - Performing Arts, combines vídeo, painting, music and drama.
The show ‘Compra’m’-Buy me-, by the company Insectotròpics, was one of the winners in the Future Internet - Performing Arts contest, which Direcció de Creativitat i Innovació de l’institut de Cultura de Barcelona recently awarded. These awards, thanks to the new technologies of future Internet, are intended to boost research and experimentation in new formats and creative content. The jury valued projects which used technology and broadband Internet, balancing this innovation and the artistic and esthetic quality of the projects.
That is precisely what the company Insectotròpics have done with ‘Compra’m’, a show which combines in real time video, painting, music and drama as live cinema. According to the company, Compra’m’ is a ‘fascinating journey, though maybe also horrific, where each of us has to choose their parameters for finding a place and becoming aware. The show presents a confrontation between two faces which define each of us within society, where one is given away happiness and pressured to be happy’. In ‘Compra’m’, Insectotròpics use a wide range of visual effects applied to different video signals, negatives, keying, blend mode, buffer recorders and random. ‘These effects allow us to access new dimensions, which would be impossible without this technologies, and, what is more important, favours the show’s conceptual discourse. They aren’t exclusively esthetic effects but they are placed at the service of a narrative’, the company explained.
As for innovation in the show, Insectotròpics told ‘the sum of art and technology doesn’t improve or revamp the creative discourse, it just provides many expressive possibilities’. ‘Technology is a tool which should be used to break down barriers and share individual artistic disciplines. Technology should enable open doors to new artistic disciplines, to new rules of the game of creation. Artists shouldn’t only talk to themselves but also be able to listen to and interact with other members in the group’, Insectotròpics stated.
Insectotròpics regard FI - Performing Arts as ‘good news for the performing art sector’. ‘It allows us to move on step forward and add one more layer to our research and experimenting with new formats and multidisciplinary contents. If, in our second show, we already worked with mobile phone cameras sending video signal to a mixer via wireless network using a router, this award gives us the chance to delve further into the subject and increase the distance’, Insectotròpics explained.
