Concerts and cinema among the cultural activities at the Barcelona Institute of North American Studies

Jazz, classical music and a course on the history of modern North American cinema form the focus of the Foundation’s activities

With the aim of promoting cultural exchange between Catalonia and the United States, the Institute of North American Studies organises a long-running programme of various activities combining music and cinema.

The Foundation’s now regular jazz sessions continue on Thursday 21 February with a concert featuring Big Mama & Sister Marion Trio, a group providing a perfect introduction to the world of women’s blues. The March session will feature the voice of Susana Sheiman.

The Institute of North American Studies also plays host to classical music on 13 March with Ritmes d’Ultramar, a group comprising Lito Iglesias on the cello, Jordi Vilaprinyó at the piano and Guillermo Prat on the double bass. Also in the month of March, the Barcelona Opera Studio offers a free morning course on classical music.

Another taking place in the morning (every Wednesday from 10:00) is the Institute’s course on the history of modern North American cinema. Already underway with the celebrated film The Misfits, directed by John Huston in 1961, the course consists of 15 free classes given by the academic Josep Maria Caparrós. West Side Story (Robert Wise, Jerome Robbins, 1961), 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968) and Glory (John Cassavetes, 1980) are some of the upcoming screenings.
