A conference about television series, in the Ateneu Barcelonès

For a few years now, television series have been gaining in audio-visual and creative quality as well as in audiences, which appear to be constantly on the increase. To such a degree, in fact, that, one way or another, almost all of us are followers of at least one of these productions. With a view to analysing and understanding their success, The Ateneu Barcelonès is offering a conference this Wednesday titled Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Black Mirror o In the Flesh, en el punt de mira (Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Black Mirror or In the Flesh, in the spotlight).

 

The free conference, which will be chaired by professor of the UPF, Ivan Pintor, will be held in the open air at 9.30 pm in the gardens of the Ateneu as part of the series Juliols Joves. Using these and other current series as examples, the discussion will focus on three main questions: What is the common denominator of today’s series? What is their narrative model? What are the four main pillars on which televised fiction is currently based?
 

Many of these series have helped, and are helping classical television formats to evolve towards a more contemporary stance. And all of them are revolutionary, whether it be the moral dualities of Breaking Bad (possibly one of the more important series currently on offer), an understanding of the present from the past perspective of New York in the 60s in Mad Men, the socio-political lessons of a historical fantasy world in Game of Thrones, irreverent criticism of some of the practises employed by the audio-visual media in the Black Mirror, or the renovation of the zombie genre in the more recent In The Flesh.
