A scene from the documentary ‘Of Fathers and Sons’

Jihadism and family relations in November’s Documentary of the Month

Talal Derki’s Of Fathers and Sons, winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, will be screened at different venues in Barcelona.

We’re at the beginning of November and that means that it’s time for another film in the Documentary of the Month cycle, which sees the same film screened at different venues over the course of each calendar month. As is usual in the cycle, which is an extension of the DocsBarcelona International Documentary Film Festival, the chosen title is a hard-hitting story that will leave no-one indifferent.

In Of Fathers and Sons, documentary-maker Talal Derki, follows on from his 2014 film Return to Homs with the portrayal of a father who is a member of Al-Qaeda in Syria with two sons, one of whom has his sights set on going to university while the other seems determined to become a jihadist.  Derki, who was born in Damascus and has been a resident of Berlin since 2014, travelled back to Syria to live with the family for two years while shooting the film, which won the World Cinema Jury Prize at Sundance in 2017.

The first place in Barcelona where the film will be screened is Cinemes Girona on 7 November, followed by the Biblioteca Esquerra de L'Eixample - Agustí Centelles (14 November), Teatre de Sarrià (18 and 26 November), Casa Elizalde (20 November), Auditori de Sant Martí (22 November), Torre Llobeta Civic Centre (27 November) and Fort Pienc Civic Centre (29 November).

The documentary will be shown in Arabic with subtitles in Catalan. For more information, check out the following link.
