For equality in the scientific world

A collection of activities to promote female vocations and raise awareness of gender inequalities in the scientific sector on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The United Nations General Assembly declared February 11 International Day of Women and Girls in Science to recognize the key role of women in the scientific and technological community, make them visible, break down stereotypes and put an end to existing inequalities in this sector. For this reason, institutions around the world are committed to commemorating this day of vindication. Barcelona joins every year to the date with several proposals, as described below.

This year, #100tífiques, an initiative of the Institute of Science and Technology of Barcelona, has organized a meeting on February 2, where the role of scientific references for girls, female leadership in the scientific sector or positioning in the workplace, among other topics, will be discussed. The meeting will be attended by personalities such as the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, the Minister of Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal, the Minister of Feminism and Equality, Tània Verge, among others.

Another proposal is the hybrid Wikimarathon (face-to-face and online), on February 13, promoted by the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) and its Committee for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to nourish Wikipedia with new content in any language about women scientists and their contributions. Also, on February 13, the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) organizes activities on the occasion of the Day of Women and Girls in Science. One of them is a theatrical representation of an imaginary meeting between Arthur Eddington, Cecilia Payne and Josep Comas i Solà.

Some local facilities and museums, such as the Vil·la Urània Civic Center or the CosmoCaixa, also join the commemoration with sessions focused on the cause. The Civic Center is hosting a workshop on February 10 on scientific stories about the astronomer Henrietta Leavit, and a talk on February 15 on the women of the Bauhaus School and their ability to link art and science. For its part, on February 11 and 12, the museum has prepared a guided tour of its permanent room Women in Science and a family workshop on Great Contributions by Women Scientists.

These are some of the proposals for the next Women and Girls in Science Day. We are sure that new ones will emerge as the date approaches. Don't miss it.
