Beneath the Surface

The art beneath the surface

MACBA to exhibit 23 historical pieces from its collection that construct a narrative of contemporary art based on post-minimalism.

During its two decades of existence, Barcelona's MACBA has built up a collection of artworks that is sufficiently large for it to be able now to delve into its backrooms and recover pieces to display to the public in new contexts. That's precisely the job of the Col·lecció MACBA division, whose latest project, the exhibition ‘Beneath the Surface’, which brings together 23 works from the museum's collection, will be on display at the museum from 11October. Its aim is to explore how the surface, its material condition and the expansion of the pictorial field are, for artists, a place for experimentation and meaning.

The exhibition includes works by Ignasi Aballí, Antoni Tàpies, Ángela de la Cruz, Derek Jarman, Rita McBride, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Félix González-Torres, among others.

Additional information is available from the MACBA website.
