Contemporary Japanese realism on display at MEAM

This new temporary exhibition features 60 works from the permanent collection of the Hoki Museum in Tokyo.

Barcelona’s MEAM, the city’s European Museum of Modern Art, aims to promote and disseminate 20th and 21st century figurative art. From 20 September to 30 November it will be hosting a selection of 60 such works by 14 artists, including Hiroshi Noda and Masayuki Hara, from the Hoki Museum in Tokyo, in an exhibition titled Contemporary Japanese Realism.

The Hoki Museum, which was inaugurated in 2010, is Japan's first museum space to be devoted solely to contemporary realistic painting and works with both consolidated artists and emerging talents. The themes of the works on loan to the MEAM are female figures and landscapes. The exhibition will be accompanied by a number of parallel activities, including a workshop with the Japanese painter Osamu Obi on the morning of Saturday 22 September, and guided tours every Sunday at midday. In return, the MEAM will be organizing a large collective exhibition in 2019 at the Hoki Museum featuring 50 contemporary Spanish figurative artists.

The Contemporary Japanese Realism exhibition is held with the collaboration of the Japan Foundation. For more information, check out the following link.
