An exhibition by Gerard Sala in the Diagonal metro station

Perhaps a metro station is not the most common place for an exhibition that attempts to fuse painting and poetry, but it’s always a good sign when artistic creativity can pacifically occupy public space without being excessively invasive. This is the case of L’esperit intangible, llum, aigua i aire by poet and painter Gerard Sala.

 

The exhibition, which can be seen until the 28th of March, is an attempt at dialog between literature and art in which the artist uses nature as a raw material for pictorial and poetic contemplation, drawing us into an exploration of the basic elements, light, water, and air.

 

Sala was born in Palma, Mallorca, in 1942, but has made Barcelona his home for many years. While he is a dedicated painter, he has also put his hand to sculpture, poetry and the design of theatre sets and posters. With regard to the last of these talents, it is worth highlighting his authorship of the Mercè Festival poster of 1995. Since 1979, he has been professor of the Painting Department in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he is currently professor emeritus.
