Tribute to women pioneers of electronic music

An exhibition recalls some of the women protagonists of Barcelona's experimental scene.

Until 24 September, Museu de la Música - Centre Robert Gerhard presents the exhibition Pioneers Women, sound waves and experimentation, a tribute to the protagonists of Barcelona's experimental scene, "a story that has traditionally gone unheard and, consequently, is unknown to most of the public", according to the exhibition organisers. Curated by Haize Lizarazu, the exhibition begins with Anna Bofill and Mercè Capdevila, pioneers in the field of electroacoustics in the 1970s, and travels through different proposals from the city's underground and experimental scene, with creators such as Rosa Arruti (Nad Spiro), Barbara Held and Eli Gras. "From different starting points, each one of them is the protagonist of weaving and enriching the musical fabric of Barcelona", explains the exhibition's programme.

At the same time, Museu de la Música is screening the documentary film Sisters with Transistors. The film, directed by Lisa Rovner and released in 2020, tells the story of how electronic music was built in the 20th century, through archive material and with explanations from the protagonists themselves. Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Éliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani, Laurie Spiegel and Maryanne Amacher are some of the participants who invite us to learn about this part of musical history through their experiences. The film, as well as the exhibition, aims to vindicate the importance of the female gender in the world of electronic music.
