Images of a promising future

A review of Carrie Mae Weems' career at the Fundació Foto Colectania

Carrie Mae Weems (Oregon, 1953) is known and valued for her extensive photographic work, which she has been developing for more than 40 years. The exhibition that will open at Foto Colectania is an opportunity to discover her best works and, for those who do not know her, get a comprehensive view of the work of this multidisciplinary artist, well known internationally but with less impact in our country.

Considered one of the most influential contemporary American artists, Carrie Mae Weems's work has dealt with matters such as family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, political systems and the consequences of power. For a long time, she has developed many complex and numerous artistic works, employing photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images and/or installation and video.

She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frist Art Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville. Weems has received several awards, grants and scholarships.

Curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, the exhibition will be shown simultaneously at two venues: the Centre de Fotografia KBr Fundació MAPFRE and the Fundació Foto Colectania. Through a chronological development, we will witness her early works and some of her most representative series, such as Kitchen Table from 1990 (20 silver gelatin prints and 14 texts on silkscreen panels). In this work, she attempts to answer a series of issues – women's subjectivity, their capacity to delight in their bodies and the construction of themselves and their image.

Tickets for this exhibition can be purchased at the box office.
