Exploring the Cathedral of Barcelona

The website of the temple permet fer a virtual visit and ofereix à wide historical and artistic information of the construction.

The Cathedral of Barcelona is one of the city's buildings worth knowing. But while we can't go there physically - due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic - a good option is to do a virtual exploration thanks to the temple's website, a visit that will allow us to discover the most interesting corners of the building with an extensive historical and artistic information of each of them.

The current cathedral is Gothic in style, but was built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica and a later Romanesque cathedral. Work began on May 1st, 1298 and lasted a century and a half. However, the façade was provisionally closed in 1417 with a simple wall, and it was not until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that the façade that we can see today was built. Precisely through the façade we can start this virtual tour, and advance towards the majestic choir, the crypt of Santa Eulàlia and the high altar. Among the chapels that can be visited are that of Santa Llúcia and that of the Santísimo and Sant Crist de Lepant. We will also be able to enter the collections of the Cathedral Museum, walk around the cloister, the chapter house and the sacristy, and get to know the tomb of Sant Ramon de Penyafort. The portal of Sant Iu - the oldest door of the Cathedral - and access to the roofs of the temple complete the visit.
