Conflicts in the Caucasus seen through the photographs of Aslan Gaisumov
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies to host the first individual exhibition of this Chechen artist in the Spanish state.
Aslan Gaisumov is a Chechen artist who has devoted his life to portraying the conflicts that have touched his life most closely. His work usually appears in the form of videos and installations of objects that he himself has manufactured. His most recent work, 'Keicheyuhea' (2017), which will be exhibited at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, is a film produced with the help of the Han Nefkens Foundation in which Gaisumov transforms and transcends personal and collective memory, portraying the moment when Zayanu Khasueva, his grandmother, returns to her Chechen homeland after 73 years. In 1944, she and her family were deported by the Soviet authorities and it had been impossible to return until recently, given that access to the remote and mountainous Galanchozh region had been restricted for decades.
The exhibition can be seen from 6 November to 24 February at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies. The film is accompanied by a monologue that recounts a story that transcends the strictly personal to become that of an entire nation and a reflection on the recovery of memory.
