Barcelona: world centre for innovative flamenco

Ciutat Flamenco, Barcelona’s oldest festival, reaches its 25th edition with the premiere of a total of eleven newly created shows in nine different venues.

Flamenco has always been important in Barcelona, especially in the development of modern flamenco, for which it has been the scenario of innovation and a bid for heterodoxy. When new flamenco voices began to emerge at the beginning of the 1990s many of them were from Barcelona and its surrounding area. And it’s no coincidence that it was then that the Ciutat Flamenco Festival was created to provide a platform for those innovators of the genre. This new edition of the festival, which will take place from 17 to 27 May, will feature a total of eleven shows in nine venues to showcase the latest developments in flamenco today.

The first concert this year will be by Aurora, a young formation that emerged from Barcelona’s Taller de Musics school and who will be playing at Sala Apolo. From that point on, there will be a show or concert every day until Sunday 27 May featuring Argentina (pure flamenco essence), Flamenkat (fusion for all publics), Chicuelo & La Tana, veteran saxophonist Jorge Pardo, the unpredictable Arcángel, who will sing alongside The New Bulgarian Voices, Ana Morales & José María Gallardo, Mariola Membrives & Piccola Orchestra Gagarin, the Euskal Barrokensemble and a nod to the purists with a performance by Rycardo Moreno.
