Guided tours of the Castell de Montjuïc
As part of the European Heritage Days programme, visits to parts of the castle not normally open to the public will be available on the 28th and 29th of September
European Heritage Days will be celebrated on the weekend of the 27th, 28th and 29th of September. Three days during which all European municipalities will be promoting their most important heritage sites in the form of open days, guided tours and a variety of activities that will vary according to the site in question. In order not to be left out, this Saturday and Sunday the Castell de Montjuïc is proposing free guided tours to parts of the castle not usually open to visitors.
The tour will visit places such as the fortresses of Sant Carles and Santa Amàlia, the all-embracing patio of the inner ward, or bailey, as well as the water tanks, the dungeons and the Castell tower, all of which are more difficult to visit under normal circumstances.
The Castell de Montjuïc has played a decisive role in the history of Barcelona for more than four centuries, though much of this time the fortress has been on the opposing side and became a symbol of repression after 1714 when it served as both a prison and as execution grounds for political prisoners, such as the famous cases of Ferrer i Guàrdia and Companys.
The European Commission created the European Heritage Days in 1991 and since that date the number of countries organising events has steadily increased. Catalonia has taken part since the very first edition.
