A nursing room at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau during the Civil War

The moment the Civil War arrived at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

The modernist building offers guided tours that explain how the years of the war were lived.

This atypical autumn brings us some premieres in terms of guided tours. Sant Pau Recinte Modernista presents a new itinerary through the hospital facilities, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, that takes the participants back to the years of the Spanish Civil War. The visit is called Un hospital en tiempo de guerra, and the next opportunities you will have to discover it, and this modernist gem at the same time, will take place on Sundays 15 and 22 November , on Tuesday 8 December, on 31 January and 14 and 28 of February always at noon. Places are limited and tickets must be purchased in advance.

The visit focuses on very intense years for the city and the country, a hard situation that also had a massive impact on hospitals. In the case of Santa Creu i Sant Pau, it became the General Hospital of Catalonia under the orders of the Generalitat, and at the service of both the combatants and the civilian population. In the course of the itinerary they will explain how the war affected the health activity, but also which advances were made in the medical and scientific field to deal with the new emergency situations. And since it is a building that has an extraordinary heritage value, participants will also be able to find out whether during the Civil War the facilities suffered any damage, either by direct effect of bombing or ammunition, by human actions taking advantage of the chaotic moments caused by the war, or by the overcrowding of the hospital.
