“Hijo de Caín” (Son of Cain), a psychological thriller starring José Coronado, arrives at cinemas

The first full length film by Tarragona-born film maker Jesús Monllaó opens in cinemas on the 31st of May

Having previously had success in the world of short film, the Tarragona-born film maker Jesús Mollaó now marks his full length debut with Fill de Caín, a psychological thriller starring José Coronado. The film is based on the best-seller Querido Caín, by Ignacio García-Valiño, and focuses on the life of an adolescent with a peculiar personality, an exceptional intelligence and one, single obsession, namely, chess. His parents, worried by their child’s strange behaviour, decide to seek the help of a child psychologist. Through therapy and their common interest in chess, the psychologist gains an insight into the disturbing world of the youth and the tense and complex relationship he maintains with his father. Discovery of the true reason for this hostility appears to be the only way of preventing the essence of evil from dominating their lives.

Taking advantage of the healthy situation of the Catalan thriller genre (see Sleep Tight and The Body), the debut of Jesús Monllaó becomes a tale of doors which open and close, of clues and traps that toy deliciously with the spectator. In Fill de Caín, then, nothing is as it appears to be. The script for the film, which was shot principally in the town of Tarragona, is the work of Sergio Barrejón and Davis Victori (the successful director of short films such as La Culpa) and the cast, aside from José Coronado, includes David Solans, Julio Manrique, Maria Molins, Jack Taylor and Helena de la Torre.
