The Historical Archives of the City of Barcelona pay tribute to the magazine “Butifarra!”
An open day entitled “Butifarra! More than a local comic strip 1975-1987” will take place on Tuesday the 14th of April with the participation of the magazine’s founders and other speakers
Coordinated by the Equip Butifarra (Butifarra Team), headed by Alfonso López, the first edition of the magazine Butifarra! appeared on the 15th of June, 1975. The aim of the satirical publication, the brainchild of a team of young comic strip professionals that included artists, writers and journalists convinced that the language of the comic strip was far more than a mere distraction, was to disseminate the idea of socialism and tackle the problems of the working-class neighbourhoods of the city of Barcelona.
The magazine remained in print up until 1987 and became both the receptor and transmitter of a succession of neighbourhood demands, establishing alliances with numerous associations and organisations from both the inner-city districts and the metropolitan area as a whole. On the 40th anniversary of its appearance, Tuesday the 14th of April, the Historical Archives of the City of Barcelona (AHCB), in collaboration with association Tantatinta, have organised an open day of reflection on the critical comic strip in the socio-political context of the Transition to Democracy.
The event is coordinated by Lluís Recasens, “L’Avi” and Pepe Gálvez, and those attending, who are invited to register free of charge up until the 10th of April, will have an opportunity to hear the opinions of people such as Alfonso López, the founder of the magazine, Carles Prieto, former president of the Federació d’Associacions de Veïns i Veïnes de Barcelona (FAVB), Andrés Naya, current director of the FAVB, editor Antonio Martín and comic strip artist Miguel Gallardo, among others.
