Happy Birthday, Bella Dorita!

Poble-sec facilities pay tribute to one of the figures most closely linked to Avinguda del Paral·lel on the 120th anniversary of her birth.

Maria Yáñez García, also known with the artistic name Bella Dorita, was born on the 23rd of February, 1901 in Cuevas del Almanzora (Almeria). Therefore, this month, 120 years ago, one of the most popular faces of the golden years of Avinguda del Paral·lel came into the world. The Andalusian star emigrated to Barcelona with her family when she was 12, and at 17 she made her debut in the world of entertainment. The Centre Cultural Albareda, the El Sortidor Civic Centre and other facilities in Poble-sec have prepared different cultural activities, from exhibitions and documentary screenings to concerts, to remember this figure and also many stories and other characters related to the Paral·lel.

Among the offer, we find the exhibition La Bella Dorita, reina del Paral·lel, in the CC Albareda, a vital and historical walk through the personal and artistic life of the artist. It will remain on the billboard until February 27th. The cultural association La BiblioMusiCineteca organises, with the collaboration of other entities and companies, the exhibition Vedettes i cançonetistes del Paral·lel, while the Biblioteca Poble-sec - Francesc Boix exhibits its collection of books on the avenue and publishes a reading guide and a historical route through the Paral·lel shows on Google Maps. There will also be different talks and round tables, such as the one that will take place on February 24 at 6.30 pm about the birth of the Paral·lel theatres and that can be followed on streaming. The next day there will be a screening of the documentary De la Gran Via al Paral·lel, and on February 27 a concert by La Banda Paral·lelus, with a repertoire made up of couplets that were sung and danced in the theatres of the avenue.
