La Festa Catalana
The popular culture festival will take place around the Barcelona Cathedral every Saturday during the month of August and will include human towers, giants and traditional dances
The Catalan Popular Culture Festival, or Festa Catalana, won’t be taking a holiday during August and activities will continue throughout the month at 7.30 pm every Saturday around the Barcelona Cathedral. Aside from the 16th, when the festival will take place in the Plaça Nova, the activities will take place on the Avinguda de la Catedral. Three groups from different areas of popular culture will participate on each occasion and will include castellers (human towers), geganters (giants), esbarts (traditional dances) and sardanas (a circular Catalan dance sometimes accompanied by singing), among other activities.
The main objective of the Festa Catalana is to acquaint visitors to Barcelona with authentic Catalan traditions and to highlight the richness of popular local culture in all areas of society.
On Saturday the 2nd, the Festa will include the Castellers de Súria, the Gegants de Sant Andreu and the Gegants del Pi. The 9th will be the turn of the Bastoners de Gràcia (stick dancers), the Gegants from the same district and the Tabalers Federació Diables Barcelona (groups of drummers). On the 16th the performers will include the Falcons de Barcelona, the Falcons de Vallbona (both human tower groups) and the Gegants de la Plaça Nova, while the 23rd will be given over to the Castellers Colla Jove Xiquets de Vilafranca, the Gegants de Sarrià and the Gegants de Sant Jaume. On the final day, the 30th, performers will include the Castellers Colla Jove de Barcelona, the Castellers Encantats de Begues and the Colla Sardanista Mare Nostrum.
All activities are free of charge and will take place around the cathedral every Saturday during the month of August.
