La Locomotora Negra, in the Palau de la Música

The band will play on the 29th of November as part of the programme for the Voll-Damm International Jazz Festival of Barcelona

La Locomotora Negra is one of the oldest jazz combos in Catalonia. Founded in 1971 as a quintet, the band has expanded over the years to the point where there are currently 17 members, always remaining faithful to their particular style of African American popular jazz.

On the verge of celebrating 40 years since their first performance in the Palau de la Música, the band presents a project that has been especially orchestrated for their participation in the Voll-Damm International Jazz Festival of Barcelona on the 29th of November. The repertoire, then, will include a collection of traditional standards which have influenced many generations of jazz musicians and listeners alike, from “Tea for Two” to “Georgia on my Mind”, and not forgetting “I Got Rhythm”, “On the Sunny Side of the Street”, and many more.

In short, this performance will be a tribute to the Great American Songbook in all its finest and, in addition, will include key participation by three renowned female vocalists. On the one hand, Susana Sheiman, oft-time collaborator with the Ignasi Terraza Trio, and, on the other, two upcoming talents who La Locomotora are desirous to present to the public, Gemma Abrié and Marina Tuset, who gave one of the finest performances of last year’s festival in the Harlem Jazz Club.
