“L’Esbudellador de Whitechapel” (The Whitechapel Murderer), in the Teatre del Raval

The musical recreates the story of modern history’s first serial killer and can be seen from the 17th of September to the 2nd of November

Following on from the successes of The Vampire of Raval, Goodbye Barcelona and Blood Brothers, the Teatre del Raval presents a musical set around the crimes of Jack the Ripper, L’Esbudellador de Whitechapel (la veritable història de Jack l’Esbudellador) (The Whitechapel Murderer (the true story of Jack the Ripper)), written and directed by Oriol Estefanell and Marga Parilla.

The musical, which lasts approximately an hour and forty minutes, features five characters who bear relation to the crimes which took place between the months of August and November of 1888 in what was at the time a marginalised district of London, Whitechapel. At least five prostitutes were brutally murdered by modern history’s first serial killer, Jack the Ripper, and despite the efforts of the police and the district’s residents, the murderer was never caught and the case has passed into the serial crime annals as one of the most controversial in criminal history.

The production includes a five-piece, on-stage band with piano, violin, clarinet, violoncello and double bass and the original music was composed by Josep Olle i Sabaté. Musical direction is at the hands of Esteve Costa i Ventura and the five actor cast, choreographed by Ricard Molar, enact a turbulent plot of love, treachery and mystery set in 18th century London.

L’Esbudellador de Whitechapel, in its Catalan title, can be seen from the 17th of September to the 2nd of November in the Teatre del Raval from Thursday to Sunday and tickets are priced at 18 €. More information is available on the theatre website.
