Light against AIDS

A citizens’ awareness initiative based on “enlightened” messages is the protagonist of this edition of World AIDS Day

The awareness campaign Barcelona faces up to AIDS, organised by the Fight Against AIDS Foundation with the collaboration of the City Council, has reached its fourth edition and will coincide with World AIDS Day on the 1st of December. The principal novelty this year is a citizens’ awareness campaign that uses light to post social network messages, hence the slogan Give your Light Against AIDS.

The campaign works via a web app, www.giveyourlight.com, which has been active since the 18th of November. As the Fight Against AIDS Foundation explain, “...each person selects either an image of their own choice or one that has been provided and writes on top of it with a red light. The composition is then shared via social networks. The app allows the message to be ‘geolocalised’ within a world map and the interactions of other people with the message are visualised on the map, forming an extensive network that includes thousands of people in cities all over the world”.

The initiative coincides with the customary illumination of the city’s most emblematic buildings between 6.30 pm on the 1st of December and 1 am on the 2nd. More than 30 buildings take part in the initiative, including Casa Batlló, the Palau de la Virreina, the Liceu, La Pedrera and the Tres Creus of the Parc Güell.

A concert programmed for the same day (1/12) in the venue Luz de Gas includes performances by Manu Guix, Jofre Bardagí, Joan Dausà, Elena Gadel, Mónica Green, Lidia Guevara, Joan Masdéu, Salva Racero and Àngel Llàcer.
