Lou Donaldson at the Jamboree

The American saxophonist plays at the Plaça Reial venue on the 1st and 2nd of August

Lou Donaldson, probably the most veteran living legend still playing on the jazz scene, will play two consecutive nights at the Jamboree Club on the Plaza Reial. Donaldson, who is close to his 87th birthday, is still active, rarely declining an opportunity to play his alto sax in venues the world over.

Born in North Carolina, as a young man Donaldson had many an opportunity to acquaint himself with the burgeoning bebop scene in the clubs of Chicago, leading him to forge a career that was strongly influenced by figures such as Charlie Parker and his sense of improvisation. His first recordings were made alongside some of the interpreters of this particular jazz style who, from the 40s onwards, broke the mould of the swing bands of previous decades, for example Milt Jackson and Thelonius Monk. During the following decades Donaldson opted for hard bop and soul jazz stylings.

The American musician will take to the Jamboree stage accompanied by Randy Johnston on guitar, Akiko Tsuruga on the Hammond B3 organ and Fuku Tainaka on drums, the primary formation on his European tour.
