Martian invasion

The Network of Civic Centres and Libraries of Barcelona is organising a host of activities parallel to the CCCB's exhibition on Mars.

Until next July, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona is hosting an exhibition devoted to the planet Mars and its links with humanity, mythology, popular culture, space exploration and the future of the Earth. Now, Mars is leaving the CCCB and arriving at the Network of Civic Centres and Libraries of Barcelona with a huge range of activities that will run until the 6th of July. A Martian invasion to explore the red planet through music, film, art, literature, dissemination and other disciplines.

From Earth, Mars appears to us as a reddish dot in the middle of the sky. Since the beginning of civilisations, the planet has always aroused our fascination and, due to its blood colour, different cultures have associated it with divinities related to war, aggressiveness, virility... This is shown in the exhibition and also in some activities of this cycle, such as a storytelling session for adults at Vil·la Urània or a talk at the Poblenou Library - Manuel Arranz.

From myth to reality. Over the centuries, Mars has been the object of study and research to find scientific evidence to expand our knowledge of its nature, its past and whether there has been life at some point in its history. Many of the proposals of the cycle bring us closer to a part of this knowledge, such as informative talks, screenings with debate, children's workshops or a reading club in the Jaume Fuster library.

The new knowledge generated by science has always been the starting point for imagination and speculation about the future, the universe and extraterrestrial life. For this reason, science fiction also takes a protagonist role in the libraries and civic centres, especially with a film and discussion cycle that includes films such as Voyage dans la Lune, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Mars Attacks! and Wall-e. And there is more: the proposals take us on a journey to Mars and the stars with other forms of artistic expression, such as an intervention by the illustrator Pato Conde or concerts like the Akron concert at the Casa Golferichs or the Outer Space cosmic music session at the Urgell Civic Centre.
