Bárbara Mestanza tells the true story of Pocahontas
The actress is also the playwright and director of the monologue currently playing at Sala Beckett.
This production aims to vindicate the role of women in history and do justice to silenced truths. Pocahontas o la verdadera historia de una traviesa is the second part of a trilogy about women that opened with La mujer más fea del mundo by Bàrbara Mestanza and Ana Rujas and the former is responsible for performing the monologue, as well as writing and directing it. In the credits, however, the production as the "collective creation of the whole team" is highlighted, especially the contributions of Carla Tovias, who is responsible for body work and creative accompaniment, set designer Judit Colomer, Technical and Lighting Director Rubén Homar, Núria Milà, who is in charge of the wardrobe, and Laia Alberch as Assistant Director.
The reason why Mestanza chose Pocahontas is clear: "Walt Disney and his people lied about Pocahontas in the same way that history has lied about itself," and therefore the author takes her as an example of "a character that marked and changed the history of North America, to vindicate and do justice to silenced truths". Indeed, this performance is part of the series at Sala Beckett titled Nothing is a Lie, and the work, according to the synopsis, "tells the real story of someone who once actually existed but who is now nothing more than a symbol".
The performance can be seen at Sala Beckett until 17 February. Following the performance scheduled for 14 February, the audience will have the opportunity to attend a talk featuring the whole of the productions team. Additional information is available at the following link.
