‘Designing real worlds’ like Victor Papanek

Vil·la Urània and Joan Oliver “Pere Quart” civic centres are hosting a programme focusing on the exhibition “Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design”.

Design-lovers are surely familiar with the work of Victor Papanek. This designer, professor and design theorist was born in Vienna in 1923 and died in Lawrence in 1998. He believed design is a political profession because it has an impact on society, the environment and ecology. The exhibition “Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design”, which has been at the Museu del Disseny for the past few months, gives visitors a deeper look into his legacy. At the same time, two civic centres are hosting a series of conferences and workshops through the programme “Dissenyar mons reals” (Designing real worlds). They will feature a reading of the main concepts Victor Papanek uses for a critical exploration of the imagination of the exhibition, such as design, ecology, social transformation, cooperation and minority rights.

All the activities in the “Dissenyar mons reals” programme will be held between 13 January and 5 February at various times at the Vil·la Urània and Joan Oliver “Pere Quart” civic centres. The series is divided into several sessions. “Utopies, distòpies, abstraccions” (Utopias, dystopias, abstractions) will be the session on 13 and 14 January. “Totes les persones som dissenyadores” (We’re all designers) is a three-part workshop on 15, 22 and 29 January, as is “Teixir possibilitats múltiples” (Weaving multiple possibilities) on 17, 24 and 31 January. Finally, “Dissenyar mons reals” (Designing real worlds) will be held on 4 and 5 February, bringing this series to a close.

All the conferences and workshops are free but you have to sign up for some in advance. More information is available on the Museu del Disseny website.
