Musical nights by the sea
New edition of the Clàssica a la platja cycle, starring the Choirs of the Palau de la Música, the OBC, and the Symphony Orchestra of the Liceu.
You will spend noisiest nights of this summer at the beach or right next to the sea. At least if you're in Barcelona, the setting of a new edition of the Clàssica a la platja cycle (in the image, one of last year’s concerts). On July 9 and 10, they await you at Sant Sebastià beach.
The proposal, which aims to offer free cultural entertainment to help you get through the summer night's heat in an open-air space, is a joint initiative by L’Auditori, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Each contributes its most outstanding ensembles for two concerts which, in fact, are a few more.
The main events are on Wednesday, July 9, with the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, conducted by Pablo Assante (choir) and Sergi Cuenca (orchestra). The program includes both the overture from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn and excerpts from the popular Mar i Cel by Albert Guinovart.
The next day, Thursday, July 10, it will be the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC), conducted by Ludovic Morlot, who will lead the evening, along with the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música Catalana. In addition to the Three Spanish Dances by Enrique Granados, orchestrated by maestro Joan Lamote de Grignon, a selection from the opera Carmen by Bizet will be performed, with soprano Mira Alkhovik as the lead, and with notable participation from mezzo-soprano Silvia Tro Santafé, bass-baritone Marko Mimica, and tenor Marcelo Puente.
In addition to these two main concerts, however, there will be others by the Petits and Mitjans Choirs of the Orfeó Català, groups that will sing in two senior residences in the neighborhood. Moreover, the Children's Choir will perform at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, for patients, relatives, and healthcare staff. All this, so that the most vulnerable groups can also join the celebration and enjoy the musical offering.
If you don’t want to miss two evenings of Classical music at the beach, come to Sant Sebastià beach — but first, check the concert information on the website.
